Stock in News: Facebook (NASDAQ FB) Has a New Rival in Netropolitan?

A new social media billing itself as an online country club launches today at $3000 a year. The new social media, Netropolitan, is primarily billed for the rich. That’s the initiation fee for this elitist social media site that promises to keep you away from the complaints of the 99%. The $3,000 is simply the annual membership fee for online snobbery. Netropolitan: The online country club for people with more money that time.

Launched today, Netropolitan is the brain child or online douchebag meeting place of one James Touchi-Peters. While his name certainly qualifies him as a wanker and his credentials as a former philharmonic orchestra conductor would suggest a pedigree…May we just point out that he was the conductor of the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra? Was Cincinnati asking for too much?

“I saw a need for an environment where you could talk about the finer things in life without backlash — an environment where people could share similar likes and experiences,” says Douchy-Peters. Explaining the initiation fee beyond the fact that he needs to buy more scarves to where as an affectation with winter just around the corner, (the fee) “ensures that our membership remains exclusive, but also private.”

Facebook Inc: Netropolitan

The site requires that users not only pay a membership fee but use their real names and that they are over the age of 21. “Member Service Associates” will be online at any time but the founder of the site makes it clear that they are not there to do your bidding despite the membership fee.

“Please understand that Netropolitan is NOT a concierge service,” the site’s FAQ section reads. “Our Member Service Associates will not book you a charter jet, or find you tickets to a sold-out Broadway show. They exist solely to help members technically navigate and find their way around the social club.”

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ FB) Business News

“We view Netropolitan.club in the same light as any country club out there,” said the founder “They have initiation fees and yearly dues for members. Netropolitan is an online country club, focused on connecting members around the world. We believe there is a need for a community like this, and we are filling the need.” Netropolitan may very well go a long ways towards disproving the adage that “you can’t buy friends.”
