Germany’s Sami Khedira, who scored the fifth goal, broke a record for sports event related tweets by receiving 560,166 tweets per minute. In comparison, at its peak, the Brazil Vs Chile game had 389,000 tweets per minute and the 2014 Super Bowl received 382,000 tweets per minute.

Khedira’s goal even topped previous records held by Miley Cyrus’ infamous MTV VMA performance, Obama’s DNC acceptance speech, Usain Bolt’s 200m gold medal and Beyonce’s 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.

Beyoncé’s Super Bowl half-time show in 2013 peaked at 268,000 tweets per minute, while Khedira’s goal has broken all these records by some distance.
