Twitter Inc (NASDAQ TWTR) revealed yesterday that the Germany’s 7-1 victory over hosts Brazil was tweeted about a huge 35.6 million times. This makes Germany vs Brazil as the most discussed sports game on Twitter since Twitter’s launch. This Germany Brazil match has doubled the tally secured by the previous most tweeted Soccer game, the one which was played between Brazil and Chile in this World Cup two weeks earlier. It also eclipsed the Super Bowl’s 2014 record of 24.9 million tweets.
The new record represents a boon for Twitter, which wants to further integrate the social network with TV watching and create a “second screen” experience. Twitter was well prepared with a special World Cup thread on Twitter, push notifications about upcoming matches and an “explore the World Cup” link on every timeline.
Twitter also released a heat-map of Geo-tagged tweets that show how the semi-final played out on Twitter. On the map one can see how activity on the social network intensified as each goal was scored, with Khedira’s goal sparking the biggest flurry of tweets.

Khedira’s goal even topped previous records held by Miley Cyrus’ infamous MTV VMA performance, Obama’s DNC acceptance speech, Usain Bolt’s 200m gold medal and Beyonce’s 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.
