Google X is where its “outside the norm” ideas are launched. The outside of the box projects that the company hopes will make it one of the leading technology companies for the remainder of the century and beyond. Google ended the week by wrapping up the acquisition of Gecko Design which will be incorporated in Google X.
Google X is run by by co-founder Sergey Brin and has had a number of significant products and projects come out of the division. Notably, the self-driving car, Google Glass, the borg-making privacy invading connected eyewear Google Inc (NASDAQ GOOG) hopes make a big splash; Loon, the high-altitude balloons that could one day connect the whole world regardless of location; and Iris, the smart contact lens; have all come out of the X labs.
And who knows what else they are working on. Not surprisingly, few details were given about the acquisition today. Terms were not disclosed and what they will be doing is anyone’s guess.

Gecko Design was founded in 1996 and specializes in designing consumer-electronic projects. According to its website the company (provides): “Engineering innovation, product quality, and attention to aesthetics are some of the aspects of production design that drive us.”
President, Jacques L. Gagne, wrote the following on the company’s website today, “This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko. We are very excited and honored to join Google(x) and work on a variety of cutting edge projects.” It’s believed that Gagne and the company’s other four employees will begin work at Google X immediately.

Gecko’s past clients have included FitBit Inc., Sonos Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Logitech International S.A. among others.
