Google (NASDAQ GOOG) has ended 2014 on a rather sour note. Google’s mailing service, Gmail, has been reportedly blocked by the Chinese authorities. Late last week, Chinese authorities blocked a number of mailing addresses. This is not the first time Chinese authorities have done the same. The service was however restored a little while later. However, the extent of restoration and blockage remains unknown.
Here in this post, we will take a closer look at the reported problems that Google and other companies like Apple, Facebook and Microsoft have faced over the past couple of years due to the Chinese authorities. We will also have a closer look at the current saga between the Chinese authorities and Gmail.
This is not the first time that the Chinese authorities have blocked a Google service. Last June, Google had a lot of services blocked by the Chinese authorities. The Chinese stated security as the key reason behind the move. Apps from the likes of Microsoft and Apple were also blocked during that time.
Google Inc (NASDAQ GOOG) News: Gmail problems
There have been varied opinions about this current situation in China. Some have come out and said that Chinese authorities are actually looking to weaken the already fragile hold of Google in China. Others have commented that this move is mainly due to security reasons and should not be speculated upon harshly.
The relationship between China and US internet firms has never been worse. People of China have been forced to look for alternatives to the services provided by Google and other firms. This has not led to a good reception from US firms. Google last year, moved out its servers to Hong Kong. Such hostility is not good for either side.
